Side-hung or top-hung?

The right choice depends on the room, the size of the opening and how you like to air the house. We'll help you decide when we visit to measure.

  • Side-hung casements

Hinged down one side, the sash opens like a door, leaving the full width of the opening clear for air to come in.

  • Top-hung casements

Hinged along the top, the sash opens outwards from its bottom edge. Handy wherever a sash swinging sideways would get in the way.

  • More than one opener

A wider window can combine more than one opening sash with fixed panes, so air comes in at more than one point.

  • Oliver did my mum’s windows a year or so ago and did such a great job that three of her friends have used him since. He’s just installed our new windows and a front door, and we couldn’t be happier. Oliver is friendly, professional, and a very good communicator, so you always know what’s going on. He also pays great attention to detail, and his work really reflects this. Highly recommend!

  • Called and asked for help realigning my patio doors. Arrived next day, friendly, professional and very well priced. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and will certainly be in touch if we have any other problems.

  • Oliver was friendly and did a fantastic job fitting our new door. It was an awkward job due to the previous subsidence but he did amazingly well and it looks brilliant. So pleased with it, and left everything clean and tidy.

  • We’ve used Oliver James several times and have always been super happy with the quality and finish of the work. Oliver himself is a very friendly and accommodating guy and would highly recommend him and his company.

  • Oliver has been professional from the start of choosing a new front door. Punctual, clean and tidy during the work. A pleasure to work with. Apologies I never had any decaf or herbal tea. Highly recommend.

FAQs

Casement window questions

Anything else you'd like to know? Ask us on WhatsApp or call 07429 353 526.

What is a casement window?

It's a window with a sash hinged to one edge of the frame. On a side-hung casement the hinges run down the side, and on a top-hung casement they run along the top.

Should I choose side-hung or top-hung casements?

It depends on the room and where the window sits, for example whether a sash swinging sideways would get in the way. When we come out to measure, we'll look at each opening with you and give you straight advice, with no salesman involved.

Can one window have more than one opener?

Yes. A casement window can have more than one opening sash, so air can come in at more than one point. We'll help you decide which panes should open and which should stay fixed.

Do replacement casement windows need Building Regulations approval?

They have to meet Building Regulations. Because we're a Certass registered Competent Person (registration 12-2331), we can self-certify that the replacement windows we fit meet them.
